Level Eleven talk
Visiting Sydney from Japan, Kazuyoshi Kimura President of Shelter, the renowned structural timber joinery company shared his insights on the firm’s business commitment to ‘Creation, Innovation and Challenge’ guided by the principle “Always seek the right answer”. This approach is exemplified in their creative CoolWood and KES Systems of structural and construction joint techniques for timber buildings and detailed construction of projects designed by Shigeru Ban, Toyo Ito, Klein Dytham, Sanaa, Kengo Kuma and Tadao Ando. Bringing a context to local timber technology projects was the presentation of Andrew Smith of DesignMake, the pre-fabrication business of Lendlease which focuses on manufacturing pre-fabricated engineered timber buildings that are site assembled. Chaired by Jeff Oatman of the Green Building Council of Australia this Level Eleven talk, in its international and local overview, alerts us to increasing acceptance of structural timber technology, its inherent beauty and environmental consideration. Progressive and efficient manufacturing approaches demonstrate the opportunity for imaginative possibilities. Project: Mt.
