PTW Sydney is excited to welcome James Morgan as Associate Principal. As an accomplished architect with experience across a diverse range of project types, we asked James a few questions get to know more about him.
Tell us about yourself
I have been working for more than 15 years across Australia and New Zealand. Throughout my career, I have worked across a broad range of sectors, with particular expertise in residential, sport and recreation, and cultural and community projects. I spent the first seven years of my career in New Zealand before relocating to Sydney, where I have worked for the past eight years. This experience has given me exposure to diverse project types, stakeholder groups and design challenges, helping me develop a collaborative and people-focused approach to architecture.
Your career highlight(s)?
There have been a number of memorable moments throughout my career. Presenting a project that won Future Health Project of the Year at the World Architecture Festival was certainly a standout experience and a proud achievement for the team involved. While project achievements are incredibly rewarding, the highlights that stay with me most are often the relationships I've built along the way. I've been fortunate to work with and mentor talented people throughout my career, and nothing is more rewarding than seeing someone grow in confidence and capability. Those are the moments that leave the greatest impression.
Thoughts on the Sydney's Mixed-Use sector?
Sydney's mixed-use sector is entering a particularly interesting period. Population growth, housing demand and changing workplace expectations are creating opportunities for projects that bring together residential, commercial, retail, hospitality and community uses in more meaningful ways. For clients, success will increasingly depend on creating flexible, resilient developments that can respond to changing economic and social conditions over time. This means thinking beyond individual buildings and focusing on the broader user experience, precinct activation and long-term community outcomes. The most exciting mixed-use projects are those that create genuine destinations, where people choose to spend time rather than simply pass through. Good design has a significant role to play in achieving this by connecting people, fostering community and delivering enduring value for both occupants and owners.
What excites you about PTW?
PTW is a practice with a proud history and a strong reputation, but what has impressed me most is its willingness to challenge itself and evolve. During my conversations before joining, there were very open and honest discussions about where the practice is today, where it wants to go, and the changes needed to get there. Since joining, I've seen that those conversations are backed by genuine action.
I'm also excited by the breadth of projects, the talent across the business and the diversity of perspectives throughout the APAC region. A recent leadership gathering in Vietnam brought together colleagues from Australia, Vietnam and China, and the conversations were incredibly inspiring. While we all approach projects through different cultural lenses, there was a shared commitment to quality, design excellence and making a meaningful contribution through our work.
What stood out most was the passion people have for the practice, their local cultures and the future of PTW. Seeing those perspectives come together to shape a shared vision for the future was something I found incredibly energising.
What do you get up to outside of work?
Outside of work, a lot of my time is spent with my two-year-old son, which keeps life busy and entertaining. I've also always enjoyed maintaining an active lifestyle through fitness and exercise. It's an important way for me to switch off, recharge and create balance outside of work. Whether it's training, getting outdoors or simply making time to move, it's something that helps me stay focused and energised.
