PTW Architects practice legacy is Peddle Thorp and Walker, a partnership between James Peddle, brothers Samuel and Frank Thorp and Ernest Walker. James Peddle, as foundational partner, established the practice in 1889 and invited his capable articled students to join him as partners - Samuel Thorp (1914), Ernest Walker (1925) and Frank Thorp (1929).
Peddle’s continuing legacy includes an outward looking approach to seeking new ideas, approaches and technologies to adapt and innovate in design, documentation and construction; a commitment to improving social living conditions and an encouragement of staff to travel, study and work overseas. This legacy positioned the firm’s ability to increasingly undertake diverse, commercial and institutional projects.
With connections to business clients and exposure to British and American corporate companies, the practice took an entrepreneurial and strategic approach to advancing new markets for architectural services created by a booming post war economy. The late Graham Thorp initiated and cultivated associations that developed into an ambitious network of Australian East Asian, UK and Middle East Peddle Thorp partnership firms. The Sydney office rebranded as PTW Architects in 2003.
The depth and longevity of the practice has enabled the firm to form strong and stable practice connections in South East Asia which continue today. As a sought after international architect PTW Architect’s depth and diversity of project experience continues to be culturally diverse and architecturally rich.
