A major addition to the Art Gallery of South Australia was completed in 1996. The extensions included a new external wing, internal gallery design, outdoor sculpture court, retail space, restaurant, and total services coordination.
The new work was carried out while the existing institution continued functioning. Construction was coordinated to cause a minimum of disruption to normal operations.
The work connected with the original gallery buildings, responding to the heritage fabric, and the gallery’s location within a sensitive city precinct and bringing together the disparate levels of the existing buildings. The new addition includes a three-storey foyer space, providing strong readable connections between key interior spaces and outdoor terraces.
