St Basil’s Randwick Residential Aged Care

The integrated community model facilitates the relationship between the residents, those in care, community members, the local school community, the UNSW and the Prince of Wales Hospital precinct. The seniors living apartments and residential care facility are set within a main street site in a way that allows residents to maintain and strengthen their ties to the surrounding Randwick community, with a range of public, semi-private and private areas.

The layering of the façade for the care facility provides sunshading, modelling of form, light and shadow along a long façade, as well as the creation of a transitional zone. When looking out from their rooms, residents will have the sense that their (relatively small) space or personal territory is expanded by the zone created by the structural and shading framework. This enhanced sense of privacy still allows a strong connection to the views and natural elements.

These sustainable design considerations balance the comfort of residents while increasing the building’s as-built and operational energy efficiencies. Other environmental benefits include: north/northeast orientation of the majority of units; landscaped roof terraces; material selection based on environmental performance; provision of natural light and ventilation to almost all habitable and circulation areas; and water storage and re-use for landscape irrigation.

There are also community facilities including a chapel, day care centre, multi-purpose hall, pool, exercise rooms, allied health rooms and a cafe.
