AMP Head Office

Designed by Peddle Thorp and Walker, at 26 storeys, it was the tallest building in Australia at the time of its completion in 1962 and the first building to break the 1912 Sydney Height of Buildings Limit of 150 feet. The building was constructed as the head office of one of Australia’s pre-eminent financial institutions, the Australian Mutual Provident Society, and has continued to serve this role.

The open plan, well lit office space and generous staff amenities and state-of-the-art technologies for information processing and transfer were designed to promote good working practices. The building incorporated office design and technological strategies that became the industry standard for the second half of the 20th century: curtain walling, ducted air conditioning using sea water from the harbour, in-floor power and data, low brightness lighting and separate high and low rise high speed passenger lifts.
