In realising its elevated position, sense of arrival and nestled location in the Lower Palace Garden, the Calyx was an iconic but serene addition to the Gardens. Built at the location of the former glass pyramid Tropical Centre, the intelligent and sensitive architecture of The Calyx allowed it to reinvent itself through emotive and informative exhibitions that regularly change.
The existing element of Ancher Mortlock and Woolley’s 1988 Arc Glasshouse was acknowledged as a point of departure for a new architectural language of pavilion and arbour.
Commissioned as a result of a limited design competition, PTW worked closely with Cockram Construction and McGregor Coxall to conceive a highly flexible horticultural exhibition building - a botanical gallery.
